Frequently asked questions

How does the ship work?

Theseus is a habit tracker built on the old thought experiment: replace a ship’s planks one by one, and you eventually ask whether it’s still the same ship. Every perfect day — every habit due that day, kept — replaces one plank of your ship, from the keel up. Forty-five planks make a whole new ship.

What counts as a perfect day?

Every habit that’s due that day is kept. You can set each habit to specific weekdays (say, run Mon/Wed/Fri), so a perfect day only asks for what’s actually scheduled. On a day with nothing due, the ship simply rests.

I missed a day — did I lose progress?

No. The ship never rots; she only waits. A missed day lays no new plank, but nothing already built is lost. Keep going and the next plank goes on.

What is the Shipyard?

A place for bigger goals. Lay up to seven ships, each with twelve “timbers” — the things you mean to change, improve, or start. Give each a goal, a running log, and a sense of how sound it is; the piece gilds as you progress.

What is the Telling?

A short, tap-through story of the myth of Theseus, revealed by touching seven pieces of the ship. It’s the app’s introduction — and a small piece of philosophy. You can replay it any time from the Harbor.

What is the Harbor?

Where your finished ships rest — each with its name, its dates, and whatever you wrote along the way. Ships are named, so streaks become stories.

Does it sync across my devices?

Yes. If you’re signed in to iCloud, your voyage syncs privately across your Apple devices through your own iCloud account. We never see your data. Without iCloud, the app keeps everything on the one device.

Are there widgets?

Yes — Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets show your ship and today’s progress, and you can check a habit right from the medium widget. On Apple Vision Pro you can even pin the ship to a wall.

How do reminders work?

Turn on the evening bell in the Chart Room (the gear on the Ship screen). It’s a single, gentle nudge — only on evenings when the day’s plank is still unlaid, never on a day you’ve already finished.

Can I export or back up my data?

Any time. Chart Room → Export everything saves a single file with every ship, habit, plank, and timber. Your data is never locked in.

Is it really free?

Yes — every feature, forever, with no ads and no subscription. If Theseus has carried you, an optional tip (“Patron of the Voyage”) is a kind thank-you. It unlocks a keepsake pennant and a set of app icons, never a feature. (The gilded icon is earned by sailing a ship home, not bought.)

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro — one app, one purchase. On Vision Pro the ship can be raised as a volume in your room, with an immersive “Night Watch.”
